I’ve had many people ask me how I got started in the world of crochet. How long have I been crocheting? How do I have the patience to do it? There are so many more questions that I’ve been asked. So, I thought I’d share with you my crochet origin story and how crochet became my passion.
About six or seven years ago, my grandmother got me a how-to-knit kit for either Christmas or my birthday (I can’t remember which). She herself knits and crochets, so I was excited to try it out. I struggled with it at first but the more I did it, the easier it got. I loved knitting and I still do but it wasn’t exactly what I was looking for in a hobby. I wanted to do something similar to knitting.
After about a few months of kitting, one day I was at my grandma’s and saw her crocheting. I obviously didn’t know what it was so I asked her. She told me it was called crocheting and even gave me a little lesson. I fell in love with it. It was what I was looking for in a hobby and I found it so intriguing. After my mini lesson with my grandmother, I begged my mom to take me to get a learn-to-crochet kit until she finally did. We went to Michaels, and I got a how-to-crochet book and a ball of yarn. I’m not going to lie. It took me weeks to learn how to chain, but it was so interesting I knew I couldn’t just give up. I watched so many YouTube videos and read so many blog posts until one day it just clicked, and I finally started to get the hang of it.
Crocheting became an escape for me and made me feel like I had a purpose creating things. The fact that I could create something from a hook and ball of yarn amazed me, especially when I later learned about Amigurumi. It also still helps me cope and deal with my depression and anxiety to this day because it gives me a moment to focus on something and meditate. Before I knew it, my high school career was coming to an end and it was time for me to figure out what path I would take in life. To be honest, I had no clue. I had so many options, but I came to the realization that crochet is my passion and I wanted to make crochet my job. For a long time, I thought it was impossible and didn’t think it would work until I got out into the crochet community and saw other people doing it and succeeding. I made the decision then and there to give it a shot. I finally took the leap and with the support and help from my family, I launched this blog that I love. I also learned how to work Etsy. I started putting effort into my Instagram, and I even started a YouTube channel a few weeks ago.
I love that I get the chance to say that something I truly love is my full-time job. I’m glad that I get to help others learn to crochet and help them out through this blog, and I love creating crochet projects to sell on Etsy. I’m still learning things in the world of crochet and have even learned how to designed a few of my own patterns. I’m excited to continue my crochet journey and I can’t wait share all of it with you guys!
