Alex The Astronaut Pattern

Difficulty:

This pattern is suitable for beginners because it uses basic stitches and basic skills in sewing/embroidery.

Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn (#4) in White, Black, Grey, Purple, Red, Blue, and Green. I used Red Heart Super Saver yarn.
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook
  • Stuffing
  • Safety eyes
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch marker

Abbreviations:

mc – magic circle

sc – single crochet

sc inc – single crochet increase

invdec – invisible decrease

ch – chain

blo – work in back loop of round only

sl st – slip stitch

st – stitch (sts – stitches)

Rnd – round

() – Total number of stitches at the end of each round

Notes:

  • Work in a continuous spiral, do not join the rounds or turn work unless otherwise stated in the pattern.
  • Use either a stitch marker or a scrap piece of yarn to mark the beginning or end of each round. Remove markers after each round.
  • I encourage you to experiment with this pattern using different types of yarn or hook sizes.
  • If you don’t have safety eyes you can use other things for the eyes like buttons or embroidering them.

Fasten off and sew hole close, leave the remaining tail for sewing later. To do the antenna pick up a stitch on top of the head and ch 3. Repeat on the opposite side and fasten off, weaving in ends.

Assembly:

  1. Sew the head to the body. Add some stuffing as you do this to give the neck some structure.
  2. Place the hat/helmet on the head, I did not sew the hat to the head because it’s a snug fit and I think it looks better but you can sew it if you’d like.
  3. Sew the arms to the body.
  4. Sew the helmet ears to the side of the hat/helmet.
  5. Sew the buttons and the black bar to the front of the body. You can sew them however you’d like, I chose to have the buttons diagonal to each other with the bar underneath them (see picture for reference).
  6. Embroider the glare spot however you’d like. I took some white yarn and just threaded it through three rows of the head twice, skipped a row, and then threaded it through one row twice.
  7. Last but not least, Sew your alien buddy wherever you want! I chose to sew him to the top of the hat/helmet.

I hope you’ve enjoyed working on this pattern because now you have your very own Alex the Astronaut with a cute little Alien Buddy! I encourage you to experiment with different types of yarn or materials and just have fun with it. Check out my other free patterns here.
