How To Crochet A Half Granny Square

If you love the look of a traditional granny square but want to mix it up a little bit, you’ve come to the right place. Learning how to crochet a half granny square is pretty similar to a regular granny square with a few different steps. These half granny squares can help you create different and unique looks when mixed with traditional granny squares. They can also be used alone to create interesting designs. Below you will find step-by-step written, photo, and video instructions to help you learn how to make half granny squares.

The only materials you will need is a crochet hook of your choice and a skein of yarn of your choice. For this tutorial, I used a 4.25 mm hook and a skein of yellow Red Heart Super Saver yarn. Abbreviations:

ch – chain

st – stitch

sl st – slip stitch

mc – magic circle

dc – double crochet

Half Granny Square Pattern:

Note: You can start a granny square with either a magic circle or you can chain 4 and work all of the first row stitches in the 4th chain. The ch 3 at the beginning of each round counts as a dc.

Row 1:

Step 1: Working in a mc, ch 3 and then dc 2.

Step 2: Continue working in the mc, ch 3 and then dc 3. You should have two 3 dc clusters and a ch 3 corner space once you’re done with this row.

Row 2:

Step 1: Ch 3 and dc 2 in the same st.

Step 2: Ch 1 and work (dc 3, ch 3, dc 3) in the ch 3 space of the previous row.

Step 3: Ch 1 and dc 3 in the top of the ch 3 of the previous row.

Row 3:

Step 1: Ch 3 and dc 2 in the same st.

Step 2: Ch 1 and then dc 3 in the ch 1 space of the previous row.

Step 3: Ch 1 and work (dc 3, ch 3, dc 3) in the ch 3 corner space of the previous row.

Step 4: Ch 1 and work 3 dc into the ch 1 space of the previous row.

Step 5: Ch 1 and dc 3 in the top of the ch 3 of the previous row.

Row 4:

Step 1: Ch 3 and dc 2 in the same st.

Step 2: Ch 1 and then dc 3 in the ch 1 space of the previous row twice.

Step 3: Ch 1 and work (dc 3, ch 3, dc 3) in the ch 3 corner space of the previous row.

Step 4: Ch 1 and work 3 dc into the ch 1 space of the previous row twice.

Step 5: Ch 1 and dc 3 in the top of the ch 3 of the previous row.

There you have it, now you know how to make a half crochet granny square! Keep in mind most granny squares end around row 4-5, but you can make them as small or big as you want.
